Rebounding Academically By Steve Mosco
When JeSen DeChalus failed a regents exam last January, he thought the best course of action would be to quit basketball
and focus entirely on school. However, before making his decision final, DeChalus' coach convinced him to play one more game. "That day, I ended up having my best game and scoring the most points I have ever scored," said DeChalus. "I learned that sports can be a great outlet and I also learned not to make decisions too quickly." To read more, click here.

The Lowell School students from the elementary and middle school located in Bayside, NY, proudly presented their annual musical theatre performance to parents and friends in the community. This year, the students presented "Fiddler on the Roof," with two performances on April 22, 2010. The in-house production team featured a cast, and a crew of close to 40 people. The director of the school production was Debi Kaufman. The performance was under the direction of Debi Kaufman and Joan Marrinan. The annual musical performance is an opportunity for students to shine and demonstrate their talent and creativity. Click here to read more.

The Lowell High School is very proud to announce that Junior David Hancock of Forest Hills, NY, has been selected a recipient of the Queens Council on the Arts "High School to Art School" (HS2AS) visual arts portfolio development program. David competed in a highly competitive selection process among many other Queens public and private high schools for a select spot in this top quality arts training program. The grant-funded high school program is offered by the Queens Council on the Arts to support a new generation of young artists, curators, designers, and historians as they prepare for their careers in the arts. The program, held on Saturdays, began February 27 and runs through May 22, 2010 at the Queens Museum of Art. David will have the opportunity to work with invited artists; visit artists’ studios, museums, and galleries to visually experience the ideas learned in the classroom and work on his portfolio (in many media) as he prepares to apply for college. The Lowell School's middle school students sponsored a caroling and gift distribution to our nation's veterans residing at the St. Albans Primary & Extended Care Center in December. Students personally prepared 40 gift bags that included "Love from Lowell" sweatshirts, socks, gloves, scarves, an address book, and tasty homemade cookies. The Lowell High School in Flushing participated in its annual "Toy Drive" in December to benefit St. Mary's Foundation for Children in Bayside. "We are so proud of the students, their families, and our staff for this record-breaking endeavor in which more than 200 items were donated,' said Susan Klein, principal at the high school.  Part of their Character Education Program, the December 'Word of the Month' was charity, which stressed the importance of giving to people in need. The Lowell School students are seeking support for the student-sponsored "Brick by Brick" Building for Our Future online campaign - with a $10 minimum tax-deductible gift. Our sincere thanks to Christiaan Vermeijden of the Netherlands, age 36, who ran for The Lowell School at the 2009 ING New York City Marathon. His run helped raised nearly $1,255 for the day. Christiaan's official finish time was 04:21:38 at 22,600th place running an average of 10 minutes per mile. With the largest field in the New York City Marathon's 40-year history, an estimated 42,000 runners swept through 26.2-miles in all five boroughs. Christiaan Vermeijden Races for Lowell ING NYC Marathon, Sunday, November 1st

Lowell won the ING New York City Marathon Lottery and was awarded a spot in the upcoming marathon. Our friend Christiaan Vermeijden of the Netherlands will run for Lowell.
